Letters from Stead to his wife Charlotte, his son Augustus and other family members, 1866-1883. The letters were mainly written from Sydney, Fiji, Samoa, New Caledonia and Auckland and discuss events in Sydney; employment on the Sea Witch, Mystery, Gem, Volunteer, Samoa and other vessels; being shipwrecked in Levuka; and life in Apia, Samoa. There are also letters written to Stead by his son, typescript descriptions of the letters, certificates of discharge, cuttings, letters commending Stead, wills of Stead, two of Stead's passports and a small wooden casket sent to Stead's son after Stead's death. It contains Stead's pipe, a tinder box, flints and a small pouch containing tinder, flint and a metal strip. Also included are manuscripts with a working title 'Twenty thousand pounds - odyssey of a gentle seaman', by Denise F. Stead. It contains extracts from Stead's letters with interlinking text. There are also photographs, negatives and copies of illustrations selected to illustrate the manuscript as well as related papers, such as illustrations not selected for the work, letters of rejection and advice from publishers, a handwritten family tree and newspaper cuttings.
